Public Awareness
- A lecture series on environmental protection for global survival has been started by scientist, medical scientist, engineers, social scientists of national and international repute of the BDTFT.
- A National Conference on River Pollution and Human Health was organised in 1983.
- An International Conference on Energy Conservation and Environmental Management was organised during 1983 in collaboration with the Department of Environment and Forest, Govt. of India, UGC, DST and the Banaras Hindu University.
- Every year World Environment Day is celebrated on 5th June.
- Number of meetings have been organised in the city and rural areas to educate the mass regarding environmental degradation and resource management.
- Various environmental programmes are launched by the BDTFT with the support of local people.
- Recently a special programme has been launched to improve the quality of life of the rural women, to develop leadership and encourage them to be independent.
Women Empowerment
- In collaboration with NOVIB, Netherlands the BDTFT launched a project named "JYOTI" Eco-development of poor women in the rural areas of Varanasi district in eastern Uttar Pradesh.
- During "Jyoti Project" non formal education of poor women, health education and family planning , waste land development, agriculture development, child education, training to poor women to improve their lives and develop leadership quality were conducted.
- Literacy programme run by ECA has improved literacy percentage from approximately nil to 0.8 per cent.
- ECA has developed self help groups (SHGs) of rural women and opened their accounts in nationalized banks.
- Women of the selected villages are availing loaning facility for variety of purposes as per their needs. This has provided them route to get rid of village mahajans.
- Recently a special programme has been launched to improve the quality of life of the rural women through conservation of medicinal and aromatic plants. This will provide them self-sustainable life and encouragement to be independent. Women will be given special training for the cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants.
- Training is given for the extraction of plant produce and preparation of the medicinal products for marketing.
- A special mass awareness programme pertaining to the preparation of bio fertilizers, use of bio pesticides, aquaculture, sericulture, biodiversity conservation and utilization of natural resources shall be launched.
Environment and Public health
- BDTFT conducts mass education programmes in the field of Environment and Public Health. Status of health care delivery system in Varanasi studied by Dr. SaritaPandey, Technical Advisor (Health Management) revealed that adequate facilities for heath care are not available in the city.
- Numerous water borne diseases were also recorded in the study area, which were simply due to drinking of polluted water.
- Local inhabitant were not found aware with the safe storage and purification techniques for drinking water.
- BDTFT provided training and techniques for water purification and storage of drinking water.
- Handling and disposal techniques of biomedical waste from different hospitals of the Varanasi city were also studied, which showed irregularity in the disposal norms of the government.
Child Education & Development
BDTFT worked for the development of poor children residing in the slum areas of Varanasi city. Children were educated under non-formal child literacy programme. They were also encouraged for school education.
